Be An Angel Benefit - Thanks for your support!

And a good time was had by all! That pretty much sums up the 7th annual “Be An Angel” Benefit. New features this year included Locks of Love, honorary balloon release, rock wall, and a life-sized Jordy Nelson to catch your throws. We are constantly looking for ways to improve this benefit and would love to hear from any of you that visited us that day. If you attended the benefit and have suggestions on how we can improve this event please contact us. We take all items under consideration!

Community outpouring of support included dropping off baskets for our auction, dropping off items to put in baskets, making monetary donations, baking items for the bake sale, volunteering your time at the office in preparation for the big day, volunteering your time to pull off the big day, bidding on baskets, participating in raffles, supporting our food sales, praying for success or doing a number of the above things! Thanks!

Donations

Donations are gladly welcome. Because these items will be given to children with suppressed immune systems, it is a requirement that the items must be NEW condition. See our wish list for ideas. Your generosity is appreciated!

Get Togethers

Ladies, book an evening to spend time with your friends while you reach out to kids touched by cancer at the same time! Project Angel Hugs is looking for groups to help decorate bags for Valentines and Easter. Contact us to learn more!

2013 Christmas Hugs

Project Angel Hugs shipped out 195 boxes and mailed another 28 gift cards to childen. We also sent out 70 cards to the kids in our program. We delivered 36 gift packages to two area hospitals. Volunteers, sorted and inventoried donations, made ornaments, packaged candy and trinkets, filled boxes, wrapped presents, weighed and labeled like crazy! Our bag decorating experiment was a great success. We decorated enough bags not only for the hospitals, but for every box we shipped.

Toy Drive Success!

I am blown away by the outpouring of gifts that we received from our Christmas toy drive!!! The gifts from private donations were over the top! So many wonderful things that I am sure the kids enjoyed.
We had a number of area businesses step up to help us out also. Thanks to Leslie Faye, Sun Graphics and to Tauschek’s B & B. These businesses held toy drives for us throughout December.
We also had a family do a Birthday “buy” for eight January birthdays. They wanted to give something for Christmas instead of getting. Because they did it for Christmas, we decided to do a birthday collection so there would be time to ship everything. They dropped all the great gifts off, so we will be busy wrapping and packing those goodies for birthday deliveries throughout January. What a wonderful new way to do something special for our kids. Our window was spectacular for the toy drive and Christmas holiday, thanks again to Brenda and Leeanne for all of their hard work.

How it Started

(Told by founder Char Jensema-Grider)

In my daughter Vanessa’s almost eight years of life, she showed courage, love, compassion, humor, strength, generosity, and most of all faith. So much of her precious life was spent hospitalized, receiving chemotherapy and then later a bone marrow transplant. We found out the sad news in June of 2001, that her cancer again had returned. Her decision was no more treatment. With great spirit and belief in God, she spent the next 7 weeks, having a wonderful summer swimming in her new pool we were able to set up for her, and spending time with her puppy, Buddy. In August of the same year, Vanessa passed onto her new life with the Lord. At that time I learned that God can give you the strength to whisper in your daughter’s ear, "It’s okay…you can go now…I’ll always love you."

Due to her long hospital stays, we learned how to capture a moment here and there and have some fun. Whether doing a craft project, having pizza with other families, receiving mail, or just spending time out of our room doing whatever to make a very difficult situation more bearable. Days up on the cancer floor can seem endless. Waiting for tests to be done, waiting for test results to come back, waiting for blood counts to go up, waiting for chemo, waiting for tummy meds, waiting for our life to begin again. Project Angel Hugs fills the void in these children’s lives by hosting parties in the cancer unit or by sending mail to the children. We encourage them to be a kid...even for just a moment.
